Ukrainian forces have destroyed 50 Russian ammunition depots, using US-supplied HIMARS missile systemssaid Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov, quoted by Reuters.
“It cuts off their (Russian) logistics chains and takes away their ability to engage in active combat and bombard our armed forces with heavy fire,” he said in a televised broadcast.
Reuters could not independently verify Reznikov’s words about the use of high-mobility artillery missile systems (HIMARS). Russia has not yet commented on the information either.
The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) pays attention to these systems and considers them as a turning point in the war, the beginning of its third phase.
This confirms previous statements by Western militaries that the Russian military is forced to look for different ways to protect against HIMARS on the battlefield, including camouflage and constant changes in equipment placement. “This tactic hinders the the Russian army to organize a massive artillery trainingwhich it has used so far in this war,” ISW wrote.
HIMARS have a longer range and are more accurate than Soviet artillerywhich Ukraine had in its arsenal.
The latest US aid package will increase the total number of HIMARSwhich the United States has provided to Ukraine, until 16.
The US has provided $8 billion in security assistance since beginning of the war, including $2.2 billion in the last month.
