Rio Ferdinand evaluate Raphael Varane is one of the top defenders at the moment. It is equivalent to Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Ramos.
Manchester United signed Varane from Madrid for a fee of 36 million pounds this summer. The French defender is expected to be able to improve the record of the Red Devils’ back line which was not good enough last season. The Red Devils are the top four teams with the most number of goals conceded in the 2020/2021 Premier League (44 goals conceded).
Varane answered these expectations by performing well in his debut match with Manchester United in a 1-0 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers in the third week of the 2021/2022 Premier League. He brought MU to record cleansheet and made one assist for Mason Greenwood’s winning goal.
Former United defender, Rio Ferdinand, assesses Varane has the capacity as one of the best defenders in the world today. He considers Varane on the same level as Virgil van Dijk and Sergio Ramos.
Ferdinand does not deny that Van Dijk is the best defender in the world considering his big influence for Liverpool in the last three years. However, Varane and Ramos have something that Van Dijk has not been able to show, namely the matter of consistency to bring his team to the title.
Duet Early and Ramos indeed wallowing in the title while at Madrid. Both brought El Real won a total of 18 titles. The duo divorced earlier this season with Ramos also leaving Madrid for Paris Saint-Germain.
“When he is fit, over the last few years he (van Dijk) has become a very deserving figure. He is a central defender who has the biggest influence on the team at this time,” Ferdinand said in a statement. FIVE podcast quoted from Manchester Evening News.
“Varane I would say will be at that level. He and Varane, (Sergio) Ramos in previous years were also there. They are top players.”
“It’s a matter of consistency and the ability to win. Varane is unmatched with Ramos in terms of wins. But in terms of performances over the last three years, van Dijk has been incredible, he’s crazy,” he explained.
