Former chairman of the Dutch Safety Board Pieter van Vollenhoven believes that extraordinary investigative officers (boas) should be given full equipment with the authority to carry weapons. He said this in the radio program This is the Day.

“I understand the call for batons and pepper spray, but you can also go a step further,” says Van Vollenhoven in the radio program. The boas “have taken over many police duties in the past, increasingly they become a kind of municipal police. They encounter resistance and there is actually little they can do. ” Van Vollenhoven thinks it is better to give them a firearm. “I think we should eventually equip them completely.”

Van Vollenhoven sees that the boas are increasingly operating as municipal police. “The problem is that the police have left the neighborhoods completely, the boa often knows the neighborhoods better than the policeman. We need to rethink the whole concept of police and boas. ”
Van Vollenhoven’s plea comes a day after the attack and abuse of four boas in IJmuiden by a group of young people. Three of the special investigating officers held up a broken jaw, concussion, and swollen face. One of them was taken to the hospital.
Actions
For the boas, the measure was full after the violence incident. The unions reacted furiously. “There are always incidents, but this was extreme,” said Ruud Kuin, chairman of the Dutch Boa Bond (NBB). “This explains exactly why something needs to be done. Boas have nothing to defend themselves with. They can’t help but get out of there. “
The boas announced today that they will campaign in multiple cities on May 26 and June 1. This includes at least Amsterdam and The Hague. No vouchers will be issued in several cities on 1 June, as is already the case in Rotterdam.
