Van den Brom: ”Cyriel always wanted more”

Cyriel Dessers was hired from KRC Genk on the final day of the transfer market. The Rotterdammers wanted to strengthen the selection with an extra attacker and they succeeded with the 26-year-old Belgian. Trainer John van den Brom says that Paul Onuachu is his number one striker, which allowed Dessers to make a temporary switch to Feyenoord.

“He is undisputed number one. Also for me. Cyriel was always behind that. If Paul didn’t play, then Cyriel could do his thing and he did that pretty well”, says Van den Brom in conversation with ESPN. Dessers was not satisfied with his status in the squad. “Cyriel always wanted more and I understand that. If you make the switch from Heracles to Genk, you take your chance.”

“You can see that Paul is doing well and Cyriel struggled with the fact that he played less. When it turned out that Paul would stay, in the last days of the window, especially from the Netherlands, there were clubs that all wanted to have Cyriel there. Including Feyenoord. Then I think it’s a good choice for him. Only: he has to play there. Then he will be an added value for Feyenoord, but also for us. He’s still our player.”
