The beverage manufacturer “Valmiermuižas alus” recently drew attention in the social media environment to the similarity of the new production of the Danes-owned, competing company “Bauskas alus” – lemonades – with “Gardu Muti” zelters already recognized on the market. “Valmiermuižas alus” published a photo in which the two products are placed next to each other and asked the public to express their opinion.
“Delfi Bizness” contacted both manufacturers to comment on the situation, as well as experts – to provide an outside view. Admittedly, opinions on whether this could be a case of plagiarism differ sharply.
Meanwhile, both products are sold side by side in stores, and at the same price, but the owner of “Valmiermuiža alus” Aigars Rungis has concluded that “David cannot defeat Goliath in this battle”, so he is not going to sue.
The idea is to create a local alternative
“Gardu Muti” zelterus has been brewed by “Valmiermuiža alus” for more than seven years.
“Ten years ago, in Valmiermuiža Park, we started holding the “Gardu Muti” farm produce markets, which we always hold in Latvian annuals. Seeing the wealth of fruits and berries from local farmers at the markets and the fact that restaurants and bars only offered imported lemonades and colas, our idea was to create a local an alternative to imports, cooperating with Latvian farmers and using only natural treasures cherished in Latvian gardens,” says Rungis about the beginnings of zelters.
