Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER): Walnut brown tragedy

An invitation to journalists to the “new” Terminal 1 of Berlin Brandenburg Airport, BER for short. It’s not yet in operation, but it’s not new.

The third largest German airport will open on October 31st and will not be “on time” as we know. Various technical problems, which among other things led to fire protection not being guaranteed, led to years of delay and many jokes around the world about the decline of German engineering.

On this day, security checks are carried out on the journalists, as carefully as one would expect from a well-run airport. But what about the aesthetics? Does it work too? After all, the German masters of functional construction, the Hamburg architects Gerkan, Marg and Partner, are responsible.

At some point it was said that the airport should be finished in 2006, then it was redesigned again at the beginning of the millennium and the opening was targeted for 2011. Nine years ago it would not have looked overly modern. In other words, it has fallen out of time with its emphatic timelessness, unfortunately backwards – but it would have seemed so outdated if it had opened on time. And you can’t tell from the fact that additional billions were built in over the years. He’s not a jewel.
