“With any type of penetration, if the vagina is not lubricated enough, it will cause a lot of friction,” says Jessica Geida, DO, obstetrician at Axia Women’s Health.

This friction can damage the vagina and cause a tear in the vaginal wall, causing bleeding.

Vaginal dryness can occur in women of all ages, but generally occurs in those who have low estrogen levels, such as postmenopausal and breastfeeding women.

Estrogen contributes to the moisture and flexibility of the vaginal tissues, so women with low estrogen levels are more prone to bleeding during sex.
