Vaccination begins in nursing homes with 14 thousand doses of Pfizer

This Tuesday the vaccination against covid-19 begins in residential homes for the elderly in Montevideo with the almost 14 thousand doses of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine that remained unused. after having closed the agenda for health personnel in prioritized areas.

The plan of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) was to begin immunization in residential areas next week, but this Monday the authorities decided to advance this instance to take advantage of the doses.

In residential Inmates and staff working there will be vaccinated. As confirmed by the president of the Integra Residential Association, Sabino Montenegro, the centers where vaccination will begin have “quite a population”, approximately between 70 and 150 people.

To go to the establishments there will be 60 MSP teams, with five members each (three vaccinators, an administrator and a driver) who will work in two shifts: in the morning from 8 am to 2 pm and in the afternoon from 2 pm to 8 pm. The second doses will be applied 21 days after the first in which the process will be repeated.

The residentials had to present a census with the data of the residents and the caregivers to organize the delivery of the correct number of doses.

At the same time, each resident had to sign an informed consent form authorizing vaccination. In the event that the person does not have the autonomy to do so (for example, those with cognitive impairment), it was a family member or person in charge who signed the authorization.

Regarding the adverse effects that the vaccine may cause, the MSP team will stay up to one hour after finishing the vaccination to attend to any serious adverse effects. But, for minor adverse effects (for example, headache or inflammation in the injection area) the residential must notify the health provider that the MSP assigned to coordinate the assistance.

Resident document

The informed consent signed by the residents or their family members, accessed by El Observador, is a two-page document that includes an explanation of the type of vaccine that will be used in these establishments (messenger RNA), and how it works to generate immunity against covid-19.

It is also clarified that the Pfizer vaccine is 95% effective in preventing the disease after the second dose.

About the contraindications and precautions, it is detailed that it is contraindicated in people who have had a “hypersensitivity reaction to a previous dose of the Pfizer / BioNTech vaccine or another RNA vaccine.” Meanwhile, the document indicates that people with a history of severe allergic reactions can be vaccinated “with caution”, and a postponement of vaccination is requested in cases of serious illnesses or people with respiratory illnesses.

In the document there is a section on most common side effects (pain at the injection site, fatigue, headache), which are more frequent after the second dose and decrease with age.

This Wednesday the second shipment of another 50 thousand Pfizer vaccines arrives in Uruguay, which will also be destined for residential and health personnel.
