Used to be a typical COVID-19 symptom, why is anosmia rarely experienced by Omicron patients?

Jakarta

At first glance, the symptoms of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 are similar to the common cold, such as a dry cough accompanied by a runny and stuffy nose. In the previous wave, one of the symptoms of COVID-19 that most patients experienced was anosmia or loss of the ability to smell. Has anosmia disappeared in the current Omicron wave?

The ZOE COVID Study application performs a comparative analysis of COVID-19 symptom data in December 2021 when Omicron dominates with October 2021 when the Delta variant is still spreading. It was found that the 5 most common symptoms in both periods were:

  • Have a cold
  • Headache
  • Fatigue (mild or severe)
  • Sneeze
  • Sore throat

At first glance, the analysis did not find a clear difference in the symptoms of the Omicron variant versus the Delta variant.

But interestingly, the analysis saw that loss of smell and taste was less common in Omicron waves. Previously in early 2021, these symptoms were classified as the 10 most complained of symptoms. Now in the Omicron wave, these symptoms are only experienced by one in five COVID-19 patients.

Quoted from the Mint, the ZOE COVID Study mentions that new symptoms in Omicron patients that are different from other Corona variants are digestive (gastrointestinal) problems in the form of diarrhea, nausea, and loss of appetite.

While the classic symptoms of COVID-19 in the form of fever and anosmia are rarely found in patients with the Omicron variant.
