Republican approach in the impeachment process: Dems speak of “national shame”
In the US Senate, a nerve-racking start of impeachment proceedings against President Donald Trump is imminent.
This is supported by a prepared resolution by the leading Republican in the chamber, Mitch McConnell, which the US media published on Monday evening (local time) and whose content McConnell’s spokesman David Popp published on Twitter.
Accordingly, the prosecutors and the defense lawyers should each receive 24 hours for their opening pleadings – spread over two days each.
This means that Senate meetings could last up to twelve hours from Wednesday until after midnight. According to the proposed procedural rules, the hearing of witnesses should only be decided at a later date.

The Democrats promptly protested. McConnell plans to “get the process done quickly,” said Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer. He also wanted to make it more difficult for witnesses to be heard and new documents to be used.
McConnell’s proposal was “nothing short of a national disgrace.” The resolution is due to be put to a vote on Tuesday. Trump’s Republicans dominate the Senate. (SDA / dpa)
