At the end of April 2022, the United States wanted to prevent the Ukrainian military from liquidating the Russian Federation Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov, who had come to the front line. This was reported in the newspaper The New York Times referring to unnamed officials in Washington.

According to US officials, after the start of the great war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine, they quickly realized that they had greatly overestimated the occupation army: the morale of ordinary soldiers was so low that Moscow began to transfer frontline generals to support military personnel.

Note that the “fatal” mistake of the Russian generals was the location next to the antennas and communications systems, which made it easy to find their location – Ukraine began to eliminate enemy commanders.

The publication reports that at the end of April, Russian Chief of Staff Gerasimov secretly planned to go to the front line – the Americans found out about this, but allegedly withheld information from the Ukrainian command, fearing that the Armed Forces of Ukraine would hit.

US officials said Gerasimov’s assassination could lead to a “major escalation” and direct conflict between Russia and the United States.

However, Ukraine still found out about the plans of the top Russian general, which is why Washington asked the Ukrainians to cancel the attack.

“We told them not to. We thought, Hey, this is too much,” the US official said.

The material claims that the message came too late, and the Armed Forces of Ukraine had already reached Gerasimov’s location – so dozens of Russians were killed, but the Chief of the General Staff of the Russian Federation managed to survive. Subsequently, Russian military leaders reduced visits to the front lines.

The sources of the NYT newspaper are not named precisely and in the information warfare mode it is impossible to verify the information in real time. It is also worth noting that Russian propaganda is constantly trying to drive a wedge between Ukraine and its allies, especially the United States, by spreading disinformation, often citing anonymous sources.

REFERENCE. On April 28, the media, citing sources, reported that Gerasimov had come to Izyum to personally command the troops in the Donbass. On April 30, near the headquarters, where Gerasimov’s Izyum headquarters were allegedly located, there was an explosion with many injured. The next day, rumors spread that Gerasimov was also wounded, after which he was rushed to Russia, but to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine information about the injury has not been confirmed. Gerasimov together with the Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Sergei Shoigu and the Secretary of the Russian Federation Nikolai Patrushev is a member of inner circle of Vladimir Putin. It was these people, according to Bloomberg sources, who made the decision to invade Ukraine.
