US Vetoes UN Resolution for Gaza Ceasefire, Sparks Disappointment from China

(CNN) – The United States used its veto power against a draft resolution submitted by Algeria in the UN Security Council calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, on Tuesday.

The US Ambassador to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, told the Security Council that the resolution proposed by Algeria would negatively affect the sensitive negotiations ongoing in the region.

An American official told CNN earlier that the immediate ceasefire proposed in Algeria’s decision would harm the ongoing negotiations with Egypt and Qatar, which the source said the administration of US President Joe Biden believes would be more effective in removing the hostages from Gaza.

“Going ahead with today’s vote was wishful thinking and irresponsible, so while we cannot support a resolution that would jeopardize sensitive negotiations, we look forward to participating in a text that we believe will address many of the concerns we all share,” Thomas-Greenfield said after the vote.

China said it was “disappointed” and “dissatisfied” with the use of the veto.

This is the third veto used by the United States against a United Nations resolution since the start of the war between Israel and Hamas on October 7.
