In order to avoid “security risks for migrants”, the Department of Homeland Security of the United States (EU) reported that the Customs and Border Protection Office will close four existing gaps on the border wall under construction located in Arizona.

Through a statement, the agency explained that “the Yuma Morelos Dam project will close four gaps.” Which, he noted, are located “within an incomplete border barrier project near the dam.”

Likewise, the document argued that “these projects address operational impacts, as well as immediate threats to life and security.”

It is worth mentioning that the Arizona border wall in question is located a few meters from the Morelos Dam and the Colorado River. For this reason, the US agency determined that its location represents a risk of drowning and injuries due to falls for migrants.

For his part, Democratic Senator Mark Kelly said he was satisfied with the government’s decision to adequately secure the border. According to the media, the official would have pressured President Joe Biden in December 2021 to close these and other gaps.

Kelly recalled that “for too long, the Morelos Dam area has been an operational challenge for Border Patrol agents. To properly secure the border and keep our communities safe. I am glad that the Department of Homeland Security has listened to Arizona and is going to close these gaps.”

However, activists and environmentalists believe that closing the gaps will not prevent migrants from trying to cross into the US through that area. Arizona environmentalist Myles Traphagen stated in an interview that Yuma “has become the new Ellis Island for Arizona. People come here from places like Ethiopia, Cuba, Russia, Ukraine, India, Colombia and Nicaragua.”

He added that “there are people who cross half the world in planes, trains and cars. So it’s a tremendous mistake to expect that closing four small openings will make them turn around and book a return flight.”
