KONTAN.CO.ID – WASHINGTON. US President Donald Trump, who is still receiving treatment for Covid-19, on Tuesday (7/10/2020) suddenly canceled talks with Democrats about an economic aid stimulus package for his country hit by the pandemic.

Quoting Reuters, Trump’s cancellation of new stimulus talks on Twitter frightened Wall Street. That caused the stock market to fall as much as 2% from its session high.

In his first major policy statement since returning to the White House, Trump abruptly canceled negotiations with Democratic lawmakers on a coronavirus aid law until after the election, even as virus cases were on the rise in most countries.

“I have instructed my representatives to stop negotiating until after the election, as soon as I win, we will pass a major Stimulus Bill focused on hardworking America and Small Business,” Trump wrote on Twitter.

Trump’s actions drew direct criticism from members of the Democratic Congress and at least one Republican, who said more stimulus was needed to help millions of Americans who have lost their jobs in the health crisis that has killed more than 210,000 Americans.

“Today, once again, President Trump is showing his true colors: putting himself first at the expense of the country,” said Democratic Party Chair Nancy Pelosi. He added, “The White House is in total chaos.”

In a phone call with fellow Democrats, Pelosi said Trump’s judgment was influenced by one of the drugs he is taking, the steroid dexamethasone, which is usually used in the most severe cases of COVID-19.

“There are people who think, think steroids have an effect on your thinking,” Pelosi said, according to someone on the phone.
