US President Joe Biden expressed his opinion on Wednesday that a “humane pause” is needed in the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.

Biden made the announcement after his campaign speech in Minneapolis on Wednesday night was interrupted by a protester calling for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip.

“I think we need a pause,” Biden responded, saying the pause “means giving time to take the prisoners out.” White House officials later clarified that he meant the release of hostages and the delivery of humanitarian aid.

With this call, Biden slightly deviated from his and other White House officials’ previous position of not dictating to Israel how it should conduct its military operations in response to the October 7 attack by Hamas.

The US president has faced increased pressure from human rights groups, other world leaders and even his liberal Democrats, who say Israel’s bombing of the Gaza Strip is collective punishment of the Palestinians and that the time has come for a ceasefire.

The White House has refused to call for a ceasefire but has hinted that Israel should consider humanitarian pauses that would allow civilians to receive aid and allow foreign nationals to leave the Gaza Strip.
