Guided missile destroyer United States of America reported across the Straits Taiwan on Wednesday (14/10), most likely to make you angry China.
The US Navy’s maneuvers will fuel China’s emotions because they have so far claimed sovereignty over the region.
“The guided missile destroyer USS Barry made regular transit over the Taiwan Strait October 14 local time in accordance with international law,” US Seventh Fleet Spokesman Reann Mommsen said in a statement. AFP.
According to him, this transit of ships through the Taiwan Strait shows the US commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
The US Navy regularly conducts freedom of navigation operations in the Taiwan Strait, which separates China from the island. The operation has always provoked a strong response from Beijing.
China views Taiwan as part of its territory and vows to seize it, even by force. China also opposes any of Taiwan’s official contacts with other countries.
Taiwan has its own flag and currency, but is not recognized as an independent state by the United Nations.
Washington ended diplomatic ties with Taipei in 1979 to improve ties with China, but the US remains the island’s most powerful ally and a major arms supplier.
China has threatened to use force if Taipei proclaims independence or if there is foreign intervention.
Beijing views the passage of foreign ships through the Straits as a violation of sovereignty.
On the other hand, the US and many other countries, see the route as part of international waters and therefore open to anyone.
