US, China Discuss Iranian Oil Purchase – Media

Iranian oil exported to China

The talks took place against the backdrop of Washington’s attempts to persuade Tehran to resume dialogue on a return to the JDPP.

Washington is aware of all Beijing’s purchases of Iranian oil, in connection with which the State Department discussed with Chinese diplomats the possibility of reducing the supply of “black gold” from Iran. About this on Tuesday, September 28, writes Reuters agency citing a representative of the US authorities.

“We raised this topic through diplomatic channels with China as part of our dialogue on policy towards Iran, and we believe that, in general, this is a more effective way to resolve these issues of concern to us,” the source said.

At the same time, the politician stressed that American sanctions were and will continue to be applied against the persons and companies involved in Beijing’s oil purchases from Tehran.

According to the agency, the US contacts with China on the topic of Iranian oil are being made against the backdrop of Washington’s attempts to persuade Tehran to resume negotiations on a return to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear program.

This is confirmed, in particular, by the information of the newspaper. The Wall Street Journal, according to which the US authorities can increase sanctions on oil supplies from Iran to China if negotiations on a nuclear deal fail.

At the same time, the media wrote, the US administration is allegedly considering other measures, for example, a diplomatic campaign to persuade China, India and other importers of Iranian oil to reduce purchases of oil products from Iran.

In 2015, the UK, Germany, China, Russia, the United States, France and Iran signed a JCPOA. The deal involved lifting sanctions in exchange for limiting Iran’s nuclear program as a guarantor of Tehran’s non-receipt of nuclear weapons. In May 2018, former US President Donald Trump decided to unilaterally withdraw and restore tough sanctions against Tehran. In response, Iran announced a phased reduction in its obligations under the agreement, abandoning restrictions on nuclear research, centrifuges and the level of uranium enrichment.

Negotiations are underway in Vienna to restore the JCPOA and lift US sanctions on Iran. The sixth round ended on June 20.

We will remind, earlier China and Iran signed a comprehensive agreement, according to which the PRC pledged to invest in Iran in the next 25 years in exchange for stable oil supplies.
