Who will play Donald Trump in the fall is still uncertain.

Enough of the countless debates and campaign appearances – now it finally starts! The first Democratic primary is held in Iowa on Monday. Truth’s Day for Joe Biden and co. Whoever wins in Iowa usually wins the party’s nomination. This has been a rule without exception since 2000.
–
But this time everything will change. More exciting than ever! For months there has been a struggle between four candidates from two camps: the one in the middle – ex-Vice President Joe Biden (77) and shooting star Pete Buttigieg (38) – and the one on the left – Senator Bernie Sanders (78) and Senator Elizabeth Warren (70). Who will win from this quartet in Iowa on Monday is completely open.
–
Joe Biden? Obama’s ex-vice was clearly ahead of all polls in the spring. But the competition caught up with him in late summer.
–
Elizabeth Warren? The law professor had her big moment in the third TV debate and took the lead. Today there is nothing left of their once-comfortable lead.
–
Pete Buttigieg? The Mayor of the town of South-Bend enjoyed a hot winter, leading the field in Iowa in November and December, according to the polls. Buttigieg, like Biden and Warren, was also unable to preserve his lead.
–
Bernie Sanders in poll high
What remains of the quartet: Bernie Sanders, longtime senator from Vermont. He has been in continuous campaign mode for six years. In 2016 he lost to Hillary Clinton (72) with a very left-wing program. Then as now, he was never really taken seriously. In the current election campaign, it seemed for a long time that his senator colleague Elizabeth Warren would reach the young, left-liberal voters better. At the latest when Sanders suffered a heart attack in late autumn, the last experts had written it off.
–
Too early, as it turns out! Bernie Sanders took the lead in the polls for the first time this week. Sanders is not only ahead in Iowa, but also in the state of New Hampshire, which will be the second in the middle of February. The 80-year-old also collected the most donations. Quite unnoticed, he has moved past Biden, Buttigieg and Warren – to the top. Madness!
–
Bernie’s trick? He made the world believe that he has no chance of being nominated. Business leaders from New York and San Francisco, including Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg (35), focused on Elizabeth Warren’s candidacy in 2019. They feared the Massachusetts Senator. Their partially socialist reform plans were severely attacked. And Bernie Sanders? He was able to quietly and secretly win over additional voters. His democratic allies also focused on Warren. In order to wipe her out, they even accepted praising Sanders. Bernie was at least “honest” when it came to tax increases, said Presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar (59) addressed to Warren during a debate. Bernie smiled.
–
Bernie: “I’m your biggest nightmare!”
Today many a democrat might wish he had taken Bernie Sanders seriously earlier. The impartial senator said almost triumphantly at a campaign event on Sunday: «Suddenly the Democratic establishment is nervous about our campaign. We also made Wall Street nervous! You are now realizing that this could really happen. I’m your biggest nightmare! »
–
Yet it is not so far. But it wouldn’t be ironic if Bernie Sander’s non-party candidate for democracy became the presidential candidate. Nominated by the party that has been beating US President Donald Trump for over three years and wants to know everything better. But then it doesn’t even manage to set up a man or a woman from within our own ranks.
–
It seems clear before the groundbreaking Monday: It is likely to result in a duel between a middle and a left candidate in the following weeks. And, oh my god, Bernie Sanders is probably right in the middle of it instead of just being there.
