The American diplomat said that since he has been in Hungary, he has learned about “the greatness of Hungarian history, its indomitable spirit, and yes, its tragedies as well.”
A history that makes Hungarians, like Americans, appreciate independence and stand up for it, as well as fight for it in 1848, 1956 and 1989, he added.
David Pressman then continued by saying that alliances do not diminish, but guarantee our independence.
Hungary and NATO are inseparable
“America’s strength comes not only from our own military strength, but also from these democratic alliances. Hungarians understand this. That is why in 1999 Hungary was accepted by the world’s strongest alliance to date. Next year we will celebrate the 25th anniversary of Hungary’s membership in NATO!” – emphasized the ambassador.
Later in his speech, the US ambassador in Budapest stated that Hungary is a member of the NATO family. “As we know, families can be complicated. Not everyone agrees on everything. But what holds families together is stronger than what tears them apart. And family always comes first,” he noted.
David Pressman also spoke about the armed conflict in Ukraine. According to him, now there is no place for political wars with friends. He believes that a real war is threatening the world order that NATO has worked to protect for so long.
We want this war to end. We want peace. But this will only happen if the Russians stop their unilateral aggression and go home. Despite all the noise about warring parties, warring countries, and even (also) warring ambassadors, ranting cannot actually be a political position. Neither is unconditional reconciliation. The United States is perhaps more focused on its relationship with Hungary than ever before. We are closely monitoring how Hungary decides. It is time for all of us to recognize our shared democratic values, the threat posed by Russia, and the strength of our alliance. Let’s protect, strengthen and expand this alliance! Our unity does not undermine our independence, it protects it. We only need to look at history to understand this
