Updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2020: test drive – test drive, Toyota Land Cruiser Prado review

It is difficult for a resident of a big city to appreciate the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Not his element. Such cars were created for something completely different. Only now, many seem to have forgotten about this and use the Prado as a banal urban crossover. But in vain! And we were convinced of this during the test drive “Prado” 2020 model year.

Just some 50 km from Moscow, it is worth leaving the road – there are pits, bumps, roads washed out by rain with deep ruts and other bleak attributes of the classic Russian hinterland. And it is here, during the off-road test drive of the updated Prado 2020, that you begin to thank the Toyota engineers who came up with and developed all these fancy off-road features. With their help, even a motorist unprepared for the harsh Russian conditions will cope with an assault on a serious off-road.

And here are just a few numbers that confirm this:

  • Wading depth – 700 mm
  • Maximum transverse and longitudinal slopes – 42 degrees
  • The ground clearance is 215 mm.

However, after the update, the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado has become a little better adapted for driving on normal roads. And it is in this that the main changes lie in the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2020 model year.

Faster? Checking the new Land Cruiser Prado 2020 during a test drive

Yes, but not dramatically. The car received an upgraded diesel engine. He became 23 hp. more powerful, and now its output is 200 hp. The torque is also increased by 50 Nm and increased to 500 Nm. The exact same engine with a larger turbocharger, modified combustion chambers and higher pressure in the fuel rail is already installed on the modernized Fortuner and Hilux.

It would seem that far from a revolutionary increase in power, in fact, it turned out to be quite tangible. On the highway, when accelerating from speeds of 80, 100 and even 120 km / h, the SUV now behaves more confidently. Overtaking and acceleration occur without strain and acoustic discomfort. No, this does not mean that after the update, the large SUV has become quiet – its voice is still perceptibly audible in the cabin, even with measured driving. But he certainly became more delicate. And this is especially noticeable at high speeds.

These tangible changes are confirmed by the passport data. The upgraded Land Cruiser Prado breaks the 100 km / h mark in 9.9 seconds versus 12.7 seconds for the previous version. The difference is almost 3 seconds! At the same time, the maximum speed remained unchanged – 175 km / h.

Toyota rightly decided to throw all its efforts into modernizing the most popular engine. The 2.8-liter turbodiesel accounts for more than half of sales in Russia. Two other engines – gasoline 2.7 and 4.0 liters – are in much less demand with us.

More modern?

Partly yes. The car has an improved multimedia system with a 9-inch screen. The main innovation is support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. At the same time, the graphics and performance of the system remained practically unchanged – alas, there were no cardinal improvements. Toyota just masked the obvious flaws a little.

Has it become more expensive?

The Toyota dealership slightly shaken up the existing configuration and rewrote the price tags. At the same time, the cost of the basic version “Classic” remained unchanged – from 2,656,000 rubles. But cars in older versions became more expensive – on average, the increase was about 120,000 rubles.

Black Onyx—–

The updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado also received a new top-end Black Onyx package, which is available for cars in both five- and seven-seater configurations. Such a car can be distinguished by special overlays on the front and rear bumpers, as well as plates with the name of the series located on the rear pillars. The interior of the car is distinguished by the presence of a multifunctional steering wheel trimmed with leather and wood. The top version costs from 4 696 000 rubles (modification with a 4-liter gasoline engine).

Black Onyx—–

In addition, the Black Onyx version received the TSS 2.0 active security package. It includes advanced frontal collision warning systems with automatic braking and pedestrian and cyclist recognition, road sign recognition, dynamic cruise control with distance keeping, driver fatigue monitoring and lane crossing alerts.

Black Onyx—–

And the SUV is now equipped with the T-Mark anti-theft identifier. What is it and why is it needed? These are 10 thousand “miniature” dots with a unique PIN-code, which are scattered over the car body and technical units. They contain information about the VIN number and vehicle equipment. In the event of theft, these points can easily identify the owner of the car. So it looks like it will be unprofitable to steal Toyota now, because it will be easy to identify the culprit by these points.

Has it changed in appearance?

Yes, but only slightly. Only the most dedicated fans of the Land Cruiser Prado will notice the changes. Starting with the Elegance trim level (fourth in the list), the cars are equipped with black mirror caps, a dark decorative trim on the tailgate, black glass edging, a black radiator grille and dark-colored headlamp bezels, as well as taillights with black inserts.

How much is?

The updated Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a modernized 200-horsepower diesel engine costs from 3,887,000 rubles. That is how much they ask for a car performed by “Elegance”. The most popular set “Prestige” will cost 4,211,000 rubles. For the top version of Black Onyx with three rows of seats, you will have to pay 4,787,000 rubles.
