Unstoppable: Rostock Seawolves land their fifth victory in a row

Paderborn. Last week the Rostock Seawolves scored 100 points in their win against Ehingen for the first time since they were promoted to the 2nd Basketball Bundesliga ProA. They succeeded again on Saturday. With 107: 96 (59:45) the Mecklenburgers won the Uni Baskets Paderborn and celebrated their fifth success in a row. Only two points were missing from the record from the Ehingen game.

Assistant coach Christian Held represented head coach Dirk Bauermann (currently in charge of the Tunisian national team) on the sidelines in Paderborn and was mostly satisfied with the performance of his team. He said: “We had very good defensively but also less good phases. The 18 assists that we distributed as a team are positive. The guys confidently brought home the victory. “

These are the current squad and coaching team of the Rostock Seawolves (as of September 7, 2020).

Paderborn’s newcomer John Bryant scored the first three points of the game. The former Bundesliga player and two-time BBL MVP (best player of the regular season) was recently signed by North Rhine-Westphalia. He should help to reach the playoffs.

The Seawolves reacted unimpressed to the initial deficit and immediately put down a 12-0 run. Thanks to a dunk from Center Ronalds Zakis, the Sea Wolves led early for the first time by ten points (17: 7 after five minutes). By the end of the first quarter, however, the lead shrank to six points, before Estonian international Rain Veideman took command on the side of the guests in the second half of the game and scored an impressive 18 points. He hit four of his four three-point throws and equalized the previous quarter record of the Rostock Seawolves by Zach Lofton, who also achieved 18 points in one game segment in February of this year. At the half-time break, the Wolves were already clearly 14 points ahead (59:45).

They maintained this lead for a long time until the hosts tried their luck on the offensive again in the last quarter and reduced the result to just eight points. “The fourth quarter was a bit wild because Brad Loesing had to leave the field with his fifth foul and some players were in poor health,” reported Christian Held and added: “It’s always difficult to win away – even when there are no fans.”

It didn’t get really exciting in the final phase, however, as the Hanseatic townspeople expanded the lead to more than ten points.

Five of their six games won the Seawolves, who occupy second place in the table. With this, the Rostockers underpin their favorite position in the ProA. Only the Bremerhaven polar bears are in a better position.

Due to the corona pandemic, some league games had to be canceled on this match day. The Rostock Seawolves were almost the only team to be able to play all six games. The Gladiators from Trier, on the other hand, have only played a single game due to many lost games.

There is now a three-week break for the sea wolves. By then, the rest of the league will probably have caught up at least some of their games. “The table is still very little meaningful, as other teams – just like us – have only lost one game, but have played fewer games,” says Christian Held.

He does not consider the longer break in the game to be a major problem. “We have to take the situation as it comes and make the best of it,” he says. The sea wolves will not continue in the league until December 5th with an away game at the Tigers Tübingen. Then head coach Dirk Bauermann will be back on the sidelines.

Seawolves: Veideman 32 Points / 2 Rebounds, Yakhchali 26/2, Zakis 14/3, Carter 12/6, Loesing 9/2, Gloger 6/2, Theis 5/3, Ilzhöfer 3/4, Jost 0/0.
