Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Almost a thousand dogs and sea lions died from the plague bird flu that hit Brazil.

The state of Rio Grande do Sul confirmed an unprecedented 942 marine mammal deaths.

This report follows highly pathogenic bird flu (HPAI) infections, which were reported for the first time in the South American country this year.

Oceanographer Silvina Botta from the Federal University of Rio Grande said that marine mammal carcasses should be buried or burned as soon as possible to reduce the risk of infection to humans and other animals.
