Jena (dpa / th) – The planned quota of general practitioners and specialists for medical study places at the University of Jena will probably not come about until the next winter semester 2021/22. First of all, a legal regulation must be made by the state, the medical faculty and the Thuringian Ministry of Science said on request. Because of the deadlines to be observed in the approval process, the regulation could probably only take effect a year later. The ministries of science and health are responsible for the implementation of the regulation, with the health department drafting and coordinating the draft law.

It is expected to be brought to the cabinet in April. Last autumn, the Thuringian state parliament agreed on an increase in the number of medical study places in Jena and, in addition, on a quota of general practitioners and specialists. Six percent of the study places are to be reserved for applicants who commit themselves in advance to later work in a region affected or threatened by medical undersupply.

The number of study places will be increased as early as the winter semester 2021/22, as a spokeswoman for the medical faculty said. Then 286 medical students can be admitted. So far there have been around 260. According to the Ministry of Science, the underserved areas and the selection criteria for applicants must be determined before the quota is introduced. It must also be clear what happens if medical students decide against working in regions with shortages on the quota ticket.

Thuringia wants to counteract a possible shortage of doctors with the expansion of the study place capacities.
