United States no longer views Hong Kong as autonomous NOW

The United States no longer sees Hong Kong as autonomous, because of China’s plans to introduce a controversial law that criminalizes the mocking of the Chinese national anthem. The US decision could be economically detrimental to Hong Kong and paves the way for new sanctions against China.

“No sensible person can, given the facts, assume that Hong Kong is sufficiently independent from China,” US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement on Wednesday.

Pompeo argues that the possible introduction of that law is “yet another indication” that China is trying to undermine Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedom. “It is clear that the Chinese government is working to make Hong Kong look like China,” said Pompeo.

A law requires the U.S. State Department to investigate every year whether the former British colony is still sufficiently independent from China to take advantage of any economic benefits associated with the US.

Pompeo’s decision may now lead to an unfavorable trading environment for Hong Kong and possibly new sanctions against China, such as travel restrictions on Hong Kong leaders acting against protesters. The US stands behind the Hong Kong people in the fight against the interference from mainland China.

Major protests against controversial law

There has been turmoil in the country for several weeks due to the bill banning the mocking or “disrespect” of the Chinese national anthem.

If people are prosecuted, they can face up to three years in prison under the new law. Many Hong Kong residents fear this is the next step in further restricting freedom of expression and criminalizing dissent.

At least 360 people were arrested on Wednesday in demonstrations against the law, Hong Kong police said. Pepper spray was also used to spread demonstrators. Earlier in the day decided the police are already closing an area around parliament for fear of new demonstrations.

The bill will be debated again next week. Then it is also determined whether the law is passed or rejected.
