United States Attacks Iranian Facilities in Eastern Syria in Response to Pro-Iran Attacks on US Military Positions in Iraq and Syria

Damascus

Military United States of America (US) attacked two facilities in the region Syria the eastern part, which is used by Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its affiliated groups. This attack was said to be in response to attacks launched by pro-Iran against US military positions in Iraq and Syria.

As reported AFPFriday (27/10/2023), the US attack on the positions of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards in Syria was revealed by the US Minister of Defense (Menhan) Lloyd Austin in his statement on Thursday (26/10) local time.

“This precision self-defense strike was a response to a series of ongoing, largely unsuccessful, attacks on US personnel in Iraq and Syria carried out by Iranian-backed militia groups beginning October 17,” Austin said in his statement.

In his statement, Austin also said that a US citizen contractor died of a heart attack during the pro-Iran militia attack. About 21 other US military personnel, Austin said, suffered ‘minor injuries, but all have returned to duty’.

The attacks in Syria occurred following a direct warning, on Thursday (26/10) morning, from the US President Joe Biden to Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei related to attacks that hit US positions in the Middle East region.

“There was a direct message conveyed. That’s as far as I can convey,” US National Security Council spokesman John Kirby told local reporters, but declined to explain how the message was conveyed.
