ABU DHABI, 17th September, 2017 (WAM) – Police leaders participating in the activities of the international workshop on the performance of United Nations police leaders in peace operations expressed their appreciation for the pivotal and supportive role of the United Arab Emirates for international efforts seeking to maintain peace, spread the values ​​of tolerance around the world, and enhance security and stability. This came at the conclusion of the activities of the international workshop, which was hosted by the Ministry of Interior in Abu Dhabi and lasted for four days, during which the participants discussed ways to raise the levels of police performance around the world through plans and initiatives that enhance performance in an institutional manner, in the presence of United Nations police leaders around the world, and His Excellency Alexander Zuev, Assistant Secretary. General of the Rule of Law and Security Institutions at the United Nations, and Lieutenant General Faisal Shehkar, Commander of the United Nations Police.

The workshop, which included a number of remote virtual participants, discussed a number of police topics such as: improving performance and challenges in implementing peacekeeping operations and changing operating environments, the emerging skill set and capacity requirements, activating standards to evaluate the performance of individual police officers, and an informal exchange between participants regarding contexts. and emerging operational requirements, as well as good practices and lessons learned across UN peace operations missions.
The event brought together officials from UN peace operations from around the world, including the United Nations Police Division of the Department of Peace Operations, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), and the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic. (MINUSCA), the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), the United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM), the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH), and a number of Officers of the Ministry of Interior, representatives of the United Arab Emirates.

On the sidelines of the last day, the Steering Committee of the International Law Enforcement Initiative for Climate (I2LEC) implemented a special workshop for participants from United Nations police commanders, and the Ministry of Interior also presented a workshop on ways to enhance performance in accordance with the standards of the United Arab Emirates government.

The special workshop, entitled “Law Enforcement Beyond Borders: Addressing Climate-Related Disasters and Illicit Wildlife Trafficking,” was aimed at leaders from the United Nations Police to introduce the goals, foundations and work projects of the International Law Enforcement Climate Initiative, which was launched from the Emirates to the world in cooperation with the United Nations Office. On drugs and crime.

This training aims to provide leaders of United Nations police peacekeeping operations with the knowledge, skills and strategies necessary to understand and combat environmental crimes effectively.

Mr. Diego Reyes, Assistant Program Director at the United Nations Environment Programme, spoke at the workshop on the topic of understanding the basics of climate-related disasters, and Mr. Giovanni Broussard, Coordinator of the Environment Team of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime in Africa, addressed the topic of cross-border wildlife trafficking and its impact on biodiversity. .

Then, Hamad Al Kaabi, a research specialist in the Executive Office for Countering Money Laundering and Countering Terrorism in the United Arab Emirates, spoke about the financial aspects of illegal wildlife trade.

Colonel Dr. Omar Al Shehhi, Director of the Research and Development Center at the Ministry of Interior in the United Arab Emirates, addressed the topic of performance management at the Ministry of Interior, where he presented the pioneering experience of the Ministry by addressing the process of leadership and excellence, job performance standards, evaluation methods, and other related topics.

The International Affairs Office of the Ministry of Interior then extended its sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of this workshop, explaining that it comes within a continuous framework of work aimed at achieving the strategic goals of this global initiative.

Lieutenant General Faisal Shehkar, Commander of the United Nations Police, also thanked the United Arab Emirates for hosting this important event, which is a valuable contribution from the UAE to the United Nations peace operations.
