Unique wallpaper bee species found in the Netherlands NOW

The Netherlands is richer in two bee species. A two-celled sand bee was found in the Herbertusbossen in Brabant at the end of April, and specimens of the black-bellied bee bee were spotted in May. That reports the website Nature Today, which keeps this kind of data.

Both bee species had already been seen in neighboring countries such as Germany and Belgium, but had never been observed in the Netherlands.

The fact that the two-celled sand bee can now be found in the Netherlands is remarkable. The animal is originally mainly found in North Africa and Southern Europe. In recent years, such Mediterranean insects have advanced further north because the average temperatures on Earth are rising.

It is not clear why the black-bellied wallpaper bee came to the Netherlands. This species is generally found mainly in mountains. With its jaws, the wallpapering bee cuts pieces of leaves from plants and uses them to wallpaper its nest.
