Unemployment Trends in Ourense: August 2023 Report

The summer closure resulted, as usual, in more unemployed people in Ourense. In August, 23 more unemployed were registered than in the previous month, until computing a total of 14,938 job seekers in the province. The end of summer contracts caused the unemployment lists to swell.

However, if seasonality is extracted from the equation and the figures are compared with those of August 2022, the reading is positive. Data from the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy show that The number of unemployed fell by 10.9% in the last year. So much so, that it continues at historic lows, still below the 15,000 threshold.

Affiliation with Social Security also brings new news. In August, 310 more contributors were counted than in July. On average, the pension institute registered 106,890 workers throughout the month. This also represents a growth in memberships of 2.4% compared to last year. Seasonality is manifested again in the statistics, as in all the months of August. The rise of tourism means the end of many hospitality contracts, for example. The services sector, which includes this type of activities, added 103 unemployed compared to the previous month. What prevented this increase in unemployment from being transferred so strongly to the general statistics were the decreases in all other sectors: construction lost 37 unemployed, while agriculture lost 18; the industry, 15, and the group without previous employment, 10.

Contracts and freelancers fall

Hiring in Ourense fell 14.7% compared to August 2022. Specifically, 5,281 job additions were recorded. In this case, the services sector led the labor incorporations, with 3,986 contracts signed, that is, three out of every four. They were followed by industry (815), agriculture (297) and construction (183). This, taking into account only the month of August. In the accumulated annual period, 40,365 contracts were registered, 10.4% less. Of them, 64.8% were temporary, which is 1.6 percentage points less than in the first eight months of 2022.

On the other hand, the bleeding of the self-employed does not stop. In the last month, 22,623 self-employed workers contributed to Social Security, 356 less than in August 2022.

As for the rest of Galicia, the statistics reflect a similar trend. The exception is Pontevedra, which managed to remove 98 people from its lists of job seekers in the last month.

Reactions

The Minister for Employment Promotion and Equality, Elena Rivo, highlighted that August left the second lowest figure of the entire historical series in Galicia, which “lived a historic summer, that is the reason why it does not mark the end of the summer season” , he assured before stating that the data are “confirmation that the Galician labor market is in good health and depends less and less on seasonality”.

The provincial section of the UGT valued data as “moi bos”: “It is already possible to observe a certain tendency towards the stabilization of the labor market”, they reported from the union. Regarding the decrease in hiring, they added that it is “good news”, since it reflects “a substantial improvement in the quality of employment generated”. Even so, they warned of the effects of inflation: “Working poverty must continue to be fought.”

On the other hand, in the Ourense-Valdeorras inter-regional union of CCOO they pointed out that the increase in unemployment in “a sector as feminized” as services means that the “most punished” group is women. The general secretary, Ana Barrios, demanded “better working conditions” and “a commitment to professionalization” to solve “the supposed manpower crisis argued by the companies”.
