Unemployment rate in New York City remains at record levels – Telemundo New York (47)

The unemployment rate in New York City remained at record levels in July as the health crisis continues to stifle the local economy, according to the latest data from the state Department of Labor.

The city’s unemployment rate in July stood at 20%, a percentage almost identical to that of June. In contrast, the city’s unemployment rate was 4.3% for the same period in 2019.

The agency detailed that the state lost 1.34 million jobs in the private and government sectors from July 2019 until this year. Of that number, 715,000 were concentrated in the five boroughs of New York City.

The Bronx, an already poverty-stricken county, appears to be the hardest hit in the state. The unemployment rate stood at 24.9% in July, according to state data.

The Buffalo area has the next highest rate at 14.1%, while unemployment in non-metro areas stood at 11.7%.

This is the unemployment rate by county for July.

Bronx – 24.9%

Brooklyn – 20.4%

Manhattan – 15.9%

Queens – 20.5%

Staten Island – 17.3%
