Understanding Depression: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment

Written by Fatima Khalil Saturday, December 16, 2023 10:00 PM Dr. Muhammad Mahmoud Hamouda, a teacher and consultant in psychiatry at the Faculty of Medicine of Al-Azhar University, said: Depression It is a common psychological disorder, but the word depression has become used inappropriately in many cases, indicating that there is a difference between depression and a bad mood that occurs as a result of a passing situation.

He explained that a bad mood occurs for a short period of time, which may last for a day or two, and occurs when you face a problem or situation that bothers you, and this does not mean that you are suffering from depression.

He pointed out that sadness is also different from depression, and the cause of sadness is, for example, the death of a person dear to you. This is also different from depression, because it is linked to an event that may last for days and then your condition improves.

He pointed out that there is another stage called the depressed mood stage, the symptoms of which are feelings of sadness, isolation, low energy, loss of appetite, lack of concentration, loss of enjoyment of the things you used to love, and sleep disturbances, and this lasts for most hours of the day except for approximately two hours.

Regarding the causes of depression, he said that depression is hereditary in some families, and in some cases social pressures and allergies affect dopamine and serotonin in the mood part of the brain.

He explained that symptoms of depression persist for two weeks, most of the day, and when it affects your daily life, your work, and your relationship with others, you must go to a psychiatrist for treatment before the symptoms get worse.

He added that to treat depression, you must change the negative thinking pattern that led to depression through cognitive behavioral therapy, in addition to treatment with medications according to the patient’s condition.
