#Mr. Han, who recently had to lie down for a month due to a disc surgery, was diagnosed with ‘flaccid constipation.’ He was confident about his health, but because he sat and worked for long periods of time, his back was strained. Mr. Han said, “I spent a lot of time lying down to recover my back, but as a bonus, I developed constipation.” He added, “I plan to improve my symptoms through exercise as soon as my physical strength recovers.”

#Lee, who is very interested in dieting, was also suffering from constipation. Mr. Lee says, “I have been on a diet since I was young, so I still suffer from constipation as an adult. If I don’t exercise, the symptoms appear right away, so I’m trying to get into the habit of eating more and exercising.”

Modern people who spend a lot of time sitting in a chair working or studying often have toilet problems. In particular, constipation is a condition in which the number of times you go to the bathroom is significantly reduced. It is known to be a very common symptom, with 5 to 20% of the population complaining of the symptom. But did you know that, on the other hand, going to the bathroom right after eating is a type of constipation?

According to the Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service, the number of constipation patients in Korea has steadily increased over the past 10 years to 579,000 in 2011, 616,000 in 2015, and 636,000 in 2020. Health experts give various reasons for the steady increase in the number of constipation patients, including aging of the body, stress at work, reckless dieting, and seasonal changes.

In general, constipation refers to experiencing multiple symptoms such as having fewer bowel movements less than 3 times a week, excessive straining during bowel movements, hard stools, or a feeling of residual stool. If constipation continues, you may feel heavy in your lower abdomen, feel bloated, and frequently experience indigestion, which in turn leads to a vicious cycle of constipation.

The habit of straining excessively during defecation can cause blood to accumulate around the anus, which can cause anal diseases such as hemorrhoids or fistula. If hard stool blocks the intestines due to not being able to pass stool for a long time, there is a risk of it leading to anal diseases such as intestinal obstruction and fecal incontinence.

But, on the other hand, did you know that frequent diarrhea or running to the bathroom right after eating is also constipation? In fact, experts have advised that even if the toilet signal comes too frequently, it could be constipation.

The treatment for constipation varies depending on the type. If it is not a symptom of a disease, it can be resolved by eating foods high in fiber and exercising regularly, so improving your daily lifestyle is more important than anything else. [사진 = 픽사베이]

Recently, an overseas health media outlet cited experts’ opinions and introduced the ‘lax constipation’ that modern people suffer from. According to the media, ‘flaccid constipation’ refers to a condition in which there is no force to push stool out due to weak intestinal peristalsis, unlike constipation in which stool accumulates in the rectal area and does not come out.

Due to weakened intestinal muscles, stool accumulates, and when you eat food, you experience symptoms in which the already accumulated stool is pushed out due to the pressure of the food you ingested. I usually feel the urge to defecate after eating. Anyone who goes to the bathroom immediately after eating may have flaccid constipation.

It is said that flaccid constipation, which mainly occurs in people with aging colonic function, can occur not only in the elderly but also in young people, those with aged intestinal motor cells, those who spend a long time lying down, or those with gastric or colonic ptosis. If flaccid constipation is diagnosed, treatment is mainly with medications that promote bowel movements, and exercise such as regular morning walks and diet are also helpful.

Constipation is common, but has various causes. Therefore, the cause must be identified and resolved to prevent constipation from continuing for a long time. The treatment for constipation varies depending on the type. If it is not a symptom of a disease, it can be resolved by eating foods high in fiber and exercising regularly, so improving your daily lifestyle is more important than anything else.

The habit of drinking a glass or two of water when you wake up in the morning is a good routine for improving constipation. It is also a good idea to develop the habit of going to the bathroom at a certain time after a meal, regardless of whether you need to go to the bathroom or not. It is also important to eat a diet centered on vegetables rich in dietary fiber and drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you are an office worker or student who sits for long periods of time, it is a good idea to get up every now and then to stretch and give yourself an abdominal massage, which is good for constipation.
