Normal or vaginal delivery also has risks. One of the risks faced is tearing of the perineal area. Either naturally or there really is a condition that causes the doctor to deliberately tear the perineum.

Yes, sometimes the doctor or midwife may need to make an incision in the area between the vagina and anus (perineum) during delivery. This is called an episiotomy. An episiotomy makes the vaginal opening slightly wider, allowing the baby to pass through more easily.

Sometimes a woman’s perineum can tear while the baby is coming out. In some births, an episiotomy can help prevent a severe tear or speed up labor if the baby needs to be delivered urgently.

Features of sutures give birth to normal

If the doctor or midwife feels that you need an episiotomy during labour, they will discuss it with you. Quoted from NHSup to 9 out of 10 first-time mothers giving birth vaginally will have a tear, scrape, or episiotomy.

After the episiotomy is performed, the doctor or midwife will repair the perineum by sewing the wound closed. The sutures are often black but can be other colors or clear. You may be able to see it if you look at the area between the vulva and anus.

Reported Baby Center, stitches usually heal on their own within two weeks of delivery, but wounds will take longer to heal completely. How fast the wound heals depends on how deep the tear or episiotomy wound is, mother.

A typical episiotomy or second-degree tear where the muscle has been cut or torn usually heals within two to three weeks. Some women experience pain and discomfort for a month or two.

If an episiotomy cuts a deeper tear and you have a third or fourth degree tear, a tear that extends into the rectum, you may experience more pain and discomfort.

There are also the characteristics of a normal delivery seam which is as follows:

1. Bad smell

Smell is not uncommon after vaginal delivery, but an unpleasant odor can indicate an infection. Cleaning the area regularly will allow you to catch odors and dirt. Some vaginal discharge is normal, but green, pus-like, or foul-smelling discharge can be an indicator of a more serious problem.

2. Prolonged pain

Depending on the extent of the tear and repair, pain can persist for weeks. It is not uncommon for discomfort to be present 6 weeks postpartum, or longer, for severe tears. However, pain that doesn’t improve gradually after the first week could signal a more significant problem.

3. There is a gap in the seam

Many women also use a mirror to monitor their suture lines for anything abnormal, such as a crack or irritation. When you clean the area, you may also feel a gap in the stitches. The presence of a gap may be evidence of an improper suture.

4. Fever

Fever is the body’s way of telling a person that they may have an infection from a stitch that isn’t healing properly. Taking your temperature and recording the results every day can be beneficial for your recovery.

5. Fecal incontinence (leaking feces)

A significant tear in the perineum can affect the rectum. If not sutured properly or the stitches come off, you may have stool leakage or incontinence.

How to overcome stitches after giving birth normally

If you experience any of the symptoms described above or believe that the perineal tear has reopened, contact your obstetrician immediately. The doctor may want to examine and start a treatment plan to help recovery. There are two most common solutions for open stitches after giving birth, namely giving infectious antibiotics or re-stitching.

If an infection is found, antibiotics are routinely prescribed. Antibiotics are usually safe for nursing mothers and their babies. If the tear is more significant than originally thought or doesn’t heal properly, re-stitching may be recommended. A new mother may be concerned about this additional procedure, but repairs may be needed to avoid further injury or harm.

Prevents sutures from giving birth to loose normal

How to care for normal childbirth stitches at home? Try to keep the area as clean as possible:

Take a shower or bath every day. Mother can use a shower head to gently wash the wound area. Don’t rub soap into the wound, just let the soap run over your body as usual. Wash the perineum after every visit to the toilet. Make sure the wound is completely dry by patting it dry with a clean, dry towel. Change the bandage frequently to reduce the risk of infection.

Then, to help with pain, Mother is advised:

Take paracetamol, which can help with pain, or ibuprofen, which can help with swelling. Both painkillers are safe to take if you are breastfeeding, but make sure you read the labels carefully. Place an ice/cold pack on the area for about 10 minutes at a time. Wrap this in a cloth or towel to avoid direct exposure as it can be painful. Take a warm shower. Change body position regularly. Mother can try standing for a while, then sitting or lying on her side. Try to eat a healthy, balanced diet and stay hydrated to avoid painful constipation. If you’re still constipated, see a pharmacist or general practitioner who may be able to give you something to make the stools softer.
