“Latvia’s participation in this international project will promote our defense and security industry cooperation with leading foreign military industry companies, as well as provide an opportunity for the National Armed Forces to participate in the development of innovative technologies, testing and adapting them to our needs. One of the 21st century advantages is smart and responsible use. At a time when much of the world’s security monitoring is carried out by automated equipment, it is only natural that innovative technologies should also enter the field of defense. with human lives in difficult situations, which is the main benefit, “emphasizes the Minister of Defense Artis Pabriks (AP).

“Nowadays, cyber security solutions are no less important than security borders. As an innovative mobile operator engaged in research and development in the field of defense, LMT together with representatives of other countries participates in research and development of innovative technology solutions for European security competencies and capabilities. We provide our expertise in computer vision and computer hearing technology and integrate IT, communication technology and IoT sensors into mission management systems, which will provide the necessary technological basis for the development of autonomous capabilities and enable faster assessment and accurate decisions when rapid response can be crucial. not only for the security of an individual country, but also for the security of the whole of Europe, “says Juris Binde, President of LMT.

Already reported that last year Ministry of defence signed a letter of intent regarding Latvia’s involvement in the first project of the newly established European Defense Fund, the aim of which is the development and further development of modular unmanned land systems.

The European Defense Fund project application was initiated by the original Estonian company Milrem Robotics, uniting 14 developers of communication, unmanned, cyber security, command control, sensors and other innovative systems from Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Belgium, France and Spain in a single consortium.

Under the terms of the newly created European Defense Fund, a consortium of industry representing companies or research institutions from at least three Member States may apply for support from the Fund. An additional eligibility criterion for the Fund’s projects is the agreement of the defense sectors of the Member States represented by the consortium on common technical requirements, as well as the commitment to provide additional support to the project and further exploitation of its results.

With the signing of a letter of intent from the Ministers of Defense of Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Belgium, France and Spain for a modular unmanned ground systems project, the Ministry of Defense undertook to provide the necessary additional support guarantees to the industry consortium for co-financing or practical testing of project components.

In parallel with this project, the Ministry of Defense continues to identify opportunities for the participation of Latvian industry in other European Defense Fund projects, including those initiated by Latvian companies themselves.

The European Defense Fund aims to promote European Union investment by Member States in joint research, technological development, production and cooperation in the joint procurement of defense equipment.
