Uncertainty Looms for Airbnb Hosts in New York City as Stricter Regulations Threaten Business

Mark Butler recently received an email that boded ill. “We’re concerned,” it read, followed by a crying face emoji. The news came from a woman who wanted to stay in his home in Brooklyn, New York, shortly after Christmas through Airbnb. The company had written to her that it would have to cancel all reservations from December unless the landlord met the criteria for a new law in the US metropolis. Butler hasn’t done so yet, so his future as an Airbnb host is uncertain.

Airbnb describes the changed rules as a “de facto ban” on its business model, which would wipe out 95 percent of its New York revenue. The law will make the city one of the most restrictive markets in the world for the company. Butler says: “It will be almost impossible to rent through Airbnb here.” For travelers, a popular overnight stay option in the “Big Apple” would largely disappear. “It’s a big fuck you from New York to tourists,” complains Julian Ehrhardt, who also rents part of his home in Brooklyn through Airbnb.
