The special rapporteur of the United Nations (UN) for Palestine, Francesca Albanese, assured this Tuesday that there are reasons to affirm that Israel commits acts of genocide in the Gaza Strip.

“There are reasonable grounds to believe that the threshold indicating the commission of genocide by Israel has been reached,” Albanese said in a report that will be presented on Wednesday at the international organization’s Human Rights Council in Geneva.

«After five months of military operations, Israel has destroyed Gaza. More than 30,000 Palestinians have died, including more than 13,000 children. More than 12,000 are allegedly killed and 71,000 injured, many of them with mutilations that changed their lives,” the text denounces.

Likewise, it warns that “seventy percent of the residential areas have been destroyed. Eighty percent of the entire population has been forcibly displaced. “Thousands of families have lost their loved ones or been annihilated.”

In this way, the rapporteur stressed in the report that “the overwhelming nature and scale of the Israeli attack on Gaza and the destructive living conditions it has inflicted reveal an attempt to physically destroy the Palestinians as a group.”

He pointed out that the massacre of children in the Gaza Strip carried out by Israel since last October 7, occurs in a territory comparable to the size of the American city of Philadelphia and warned that the collective trauma generated by Israel’s massacre in Gaza will be experienced by future generations.

After analyzing the patterns of violence and the policies that Israel has applied in Gaza, the report determined that Israel commits at least three types of genocidal acts in that Palestinian territory: murder of members of a group, serious physical or mental harm to members of a group, and bring about conditions calculated to lead to their partial or complete physical destruction.

The day before, the commissioner general of the United Nations Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, specified that the number of children murdered in Gaza is higher than those who have perished in everyone, in the last four years.

In this regard, he denounced that it is a “war waged against children.” “It is a war against their childhood and their future.”
