UN experts criticize Texas abortion law, also opposition from society

President Biden criticized the new law and the Supreme Court decision, calling it “an unprecedented attack on women’s fundamental rights.”

Human rights lawyer Upreti is also critical of the court. “The law and the way it came about through the Supreme Court’s refusal to lie with existing case law is throwing back not only Texas, but, in the eyes of the international community, the entire country.”

Reem Alsalem, the UN’s independent overseer of violence against women, told The Guardian that Supreme Court justices put women in a potentially dangerous situation, especially women in a vulnerable position.

What she especially resents is that the law makes no exceptions for rape or incest. “That exacerbates their trauma and their mental and physical suffering.”

There is also opposition to the new law in other places. Like this harassed activists on TikTok, for example last week a website of the major anti-abortion organization Texas Right to Life where citizens could anonymously report violators of the law.
