UM Students Use Waste Money for Mushroom Growing Media

Malang, IDN Times – During this time, waste money that is damaged or unused will be withdrawn by the bank for destruction. However, an interesting innovation using waste money was produced by five students of the State University of Malang. They modified the waste banknotes into a growing medium for oyster mushrooms.

The five students who produced these creations were Febriandari Annisa Murti, Muhamad Syaikhu Alam, Rani Dwi Lestari, Thoriq Aziz, Daffa’ Rizal. Waste paper money is considered to have better quality than existing planting media such as husks.

According to Febriandari, the processing itself goes through several stages. Initially, waste money had to go through pumping first. Then proceed with biodingking or the process of removing substances contained in waste money. Then the waste banknotes are soaked for 1-2 nights before they can be used for planting media. After going through this process, cotton fiber will be obtained from the waste.

“Later, the cotton fiber is mixed with cocopit, rice bran, lime and water. Then it is put into a container for oyster mushroom seedling seedling,” he added.

The seeding process itself takes about three weeks. After that, oyster mushrooms can be harvested and consumed. However, to be able to produce maximum mushroom harvest, the nursery process must be carried out in a sterile and clean place.

“Cotton fiber from this waste of money absorbs water faster. Then it also helps the mycelium to spread faster,” he continued.

Regardless, Febriandari admits that the most time-consuming process is the processing of waste money. The reason is to produce the best cotton fiber, processing waste money must be careful and done properly.

“For the processing of waste money, it requires a slightly complicated process. That is a bit of an obstacle,” he said.
