KIEV Ukraine will be able to win the war in 2023 if it accepts more Western weapons, especially long range missile and heavy tanks. This was revealed by the adviser to the president of Ukraine, Mykhaylo Podolyak, to AFP, Wednesday (11/1/2023).

“Otherwise, the war will last for decades,” said Podolyak. This shows that the bloodiest battles to date are taking place in eastern Ukraine in Bakhmut and Soledar.

“Only missiles with a range of more than 100 km will allow us to significantly accelerate the occupation of our territories,” he told AFP in an interview.

The United States last year supplied Ukraine with a missile system with a range of around 80 km that is credited with turning the tide of the conflict in Kiev’s favor on several fronts. Kiev also recently received a similar French system.

But, it does put pressure on Washington to deliver the US ATACMS missile, which has a range of around 300 km.

The system will allow Ukrainian troops to target Russian weapons depots deep inside Ukrainian territory that are controlled by Moscow but are currently out of range of weapons in the Kiev arsenal.

“Ukraine can destroy all of Russia’s military infrastructure in the occupied territories, including in the Donbass in eastern Ukraine and in Crimea, the Black Sea peninsula which was annexed by Moscow in 2014,” Podolyak said.

However, the US has been hesitant to offer long-range missile capacity to Ukraine, fearing an escalation that would make the US more direct against Russia. “We are not going to attack Russia. We are waging an exclusively defensive war,” he said.
