Possible direct entry of the federal government to Lufthansa

The corona crisis is causing difficulties for Lufthansa. The airline has long resisted entry by the federal government, but apparently the Dax group now has no other option.

In the debate on government aid to Lufthansa, the UFO union is now opposing federal influence. State representatives on the Supervisory Board would offer “no added value” in operational business, according to the well-known trade unionist Nicoley Baublies.

SEven if the federal government invests billions of euros to rescue Lufthansa, it does not necessarily have to have influence from a trade union perspective. “The state does not have to be represented on the board,” Nicoley Baublies, representative of the UFO (Independent Flight Attendants Organization) union, told WELT AM SONNTAG. “Conditions for government loans can also be contractually regulated,” said the trade unionist, who himself sat on the airline’s control committee until early 2018 and was formerly the head of the UFO. “State representatives on the Supervisory Board do not offer any added value in operational business,” says Baublies.

The UFO representative, who is otherwise considered a hard critic of Carsten Spohr, thus supports the view of the Lufthansa boss. Spohr had spoken out against the state having a say in business operations as a condition for tax billions.

For Baublies, Spohr faces a negotiation dilemma in the ongoing talks on the Lufthansa rescue. On the one hand, warned of empty coffers, on the other hand, Spohr wants to profile himself as an independent corporate leader, who can also pull it through against the state if necessary. Due to numerous unanswered questions, Baublies does not expect an agreement with all four of the Lufthansa Group’s home countries, i.e.Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Belgium, until mid-May.

Spohr internally put Lufthansa’s capital requirements at a “high single-digit billion amount”. Germany supposedly wants to take a 25 percent stake in the capital and demand a supervisory board position.
