DARMSTADT – SV Darmstadt 98 has to look for a new coach for the next season – for the junior Bundesliga team. “Georg-Martin Leopold informed Lilien that he would like to take on a new challenge in men’s football in the summer,” said the second division football club in a press release on the parting of ways after this season. Leopold took over the Lilien U19s for the 2019/20 season and immediately led to promotion to the Bundesliga. Last season, the Junglilien were in a non-relegation zone at the time of the corona-related demolition. The U19s are currently eleventh in the table after 16 matchdays with 23 points.

“After three wonderful and successful years, the decision has matured in me to take on a new challenge,” Leopold is quoted as saying and continues to speak of the “feeling that it’s time to take the famous next step and take on a task in the Lord – wanting to dedicate this area.” Exactly where he will take on this task was left open by those involved.

“To date, Georg-Martin Leopold has not only fulfilled all the goals and expectations placed on him in terms of sport, but has also contributed enormously to the further development of the youth academy,” are the words of praise from Carsten Wehlmann, who is the Lilien’s sports director also refers to the professional appearances of players from Leopold’s age group and emphasizes: “Of course we regret his decision, but it is absolutely legitimate.”

“With his work, his technical expertise and his content-related approaches, he has had an extremely positive impact on the NLZ area in recent years,” explains Björn Kopper, who, as head of the youth academy, follows up: “We hope that we can end the path together be able to crown the season with staying up again.”
