Turkish President Calls on US to Find “Terrorist” Who Attacked Turkish House in New York

AA / Ankara / Diyar Guldogan

The president of Türkiye called on the United States on Monday to find the “terrorist” who attacked the Turkish House in New York.

“In Europe, the (terrorist group) PKK saw that things were getting worse, they started attacking voters. What’s more, they attacked the Turkish House in the United States, just opposite the United Nations headquarters, and broke the windows,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

“Are we not going to say to the authorities and to the American security forces: ‘You must quickly identify this terrorist and do what is necessary’?” he declared during an event organized in Istanbul.

“The Turkish House is under the responsibility of the American authorities there. You absolutely must find this terrorist who broke the windows of the Turkish House with a crowbar,” added President Erdogan.

During its more than 35-year campaign of terror against Türkiye, the PKK – classified as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the United States and the European Union – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

The Turkish House in New York, a building reserved for diplomatic missions and cultural activities of the country, located opposite the UN headquarters, suffered an attack in the night from Monday to Tuesday. The malefactor smashed the building’s windows at 3:14 a.m. local time, Türkiye’s Consul General in New York, Reyhan Ozgur, told Anadolu.

The consul said no one was injured but that 12 windows and doors to the building were damaged.

He added that the assailant, who has not yet been identified, left a small crowbar at the scene.

The skyscraper, which opened its doors in September 2012, saw its perimeter cordoned off by the New York police and an investigation was opened to shed light on the facts.

The incident had no impact on the voting operations of the second round of the presidential election in Türkiye. Turkish nationals in New York are currently flocking to the Turkish House to cast their vote, Ozgur added.
