Turkey’s actions to ease tensions are not convincing, the Greek foreign minister said

Turkey’s recent steps to ease tensions with Greece and Cyprus are “unconvincing” and the European Union (EU) must take action to make Ankara comply with international law, Greek Foreign Minister Nick Dendy said on Friday.

He stated that Turkey has decided not to seize the opportunity offered by the EU in October to ease tensions in the region so that the bloc can begin to re-establish relations with Ankara.

Turkey last week withdrew a geological survey vessel from disputed waters in the eastern Mediterranean Greece and Cyprus considers it its economic area.

However, Dandy stressed that the return of the research vessel to the port is not enough.

“Turkey’s belated actions in recent days to seemingly de-escalate tensions are not convincing,” Dandy said after meeting with his Cypriot counterpart Nick Christodulidi. “We therefore call on all Member States of the European Union to live up to their responsibilities.”

“These decisions are important not only to send a clear message to Turkey, but also to prove the credibility of the European Union,” the minister added.

Dendy and Christodulidis also pointed out that Turkey had continued to explore for natural gas deposits in waters to which Cyprus had exclusive rights, while provocatively partially opening a Greek Cypriot abandoned resort on the Turkish-controlled part of the divided island.

Kristodulidis emphasized that the EU must act “conscientiously, decisively and credibly” and take the lead in matters concerning the sovereignty of its member states.

“It is clear that the ball is on the side of the Turkish court and any decision depends on the attitude of Turkey, which [ES] The leaders will evaluate and take a decision, as they agreed in October, “the Cypriot Foreign Minister added.
