How business-friendly are the 16 medium-sized centers in southern Hesse? The Darmstadt Chamber of Commerce and Industry is now comparing this for the fourth time.

For the fourth time, the Darmstadt / Rhein-Main / Neckar Chamber of Commerce and Industry dealt with the question of how business-friendly the medium-sized centers in southern Hesse are in its own study. 16 medium-sized cities in the Darmstadt-Dieburg, Groß-Gerau, Odenwald and Bergstrasse districts were included in the study. They were compared using 36 economic and structural indicators.

According to the study, the city of Bensheim an der Bergstrasse is the most business-friendly, closely followed by the district town of Heppenheim and Weiterstadt in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district. Lorsch (Bergstrasse district) and the district town of Groß-Gerau follow at some distance. At the bottom of the ranking are Michelstadt in the Odenwald and the cities of Bürstadt and Lampertheim in the Bergstrasse district.

The study states that the geographical location obviously “does not play a decisive role” in the overall result. The surrounding municipalities also apparently benefited little from the vicinity of the Darmstadt regional center. It is noticeable that municipalities from the Bergstrasse and Darmstadt-Dieburg districts made up the first four places among themselves.

The city of Bensheim in particular has several very good placements and, according to the IHK, has “hardly any weaknesses”. On the other hand, the medium-sized centers in the Groß-Gerau district and in the Odenwald “too seldom manage to win good partial placements”, which has a negative effect on an overall placement, writes author Peter Kühnl, who heads the company and location department at the IHK.

The chamber deliberately published the fourth edition of its middle center ranking before the local elections in order to “stimulate the political debate about business-friendly location factors for local authorities”, says Kühnl. The study is suitable as a “solid basis for formulating concrete recommendations for action from the point of view of the regional economy”.

IHK President Matthias Martiné said at the presentation of the ranking on Friday that the results and the differences in individual indicators were more important than the order. The chamber’s central strategic goal is to “make the region even more attractive for companies, skilled workers and their families”.
