Tsunami Hits Tonga After Volcanic Eruption

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Hunga Ha’appai volcano in Tonga erupted on Saturday (15/1/2022). The eruption then triggered a tsunami in the coastal country. One of them is a wave as high as 1.2 meters in Nuku Alofa.

The police and local authorities then asked residents to move to higher ground. The sky in Tonga also looked dark, the effect of the volcanic eruption.

So far, there has been no tsunami warning for Tonga’s neighbors such as Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand. However, Australian ABC reporter Tali Auliitia reported the effects of the eruption were felt in Fuji, Samoa and American Samoa.

In a video circulating on social media Twitter, water can be seen entering one of the beaches in Tonga. The video was shared by Dr. Faka’iloatonga Taumoefolau via his Twitter account.

Mount Hunga Tonga-Hubga Ha’apai is located about 30 kilometers southeast of Fonuafo’ou Island in Tonga. The mountain has been active since December 20, 2021, but was declared inactive on January 11, 2022.
