TSMC is turning surplus microchip production into shoes

We only see part of the e-waste problem – your used smartphone sometimes ends up with a grandmother or a student, but we don’t see the production residues. TSMC has decided that silicon scraps from manufacturing can be recycled into shoes.

Ccilu is a company that uses TSMC’s surplus production to make shoes. The shoes are called eco-friendly in some kind of marketing frenzy, but it is hard to see behind all the mountains of trash. Ccilu also makes shoes from old plastic bottles and even coffee grounds.

Such shoe production supposedly reduces CO2 emissions by 1 kilogram per pair of shoes produced from TSMC’s waste. Likewise, the use of petroleum products was reduced by 0.5 liters.

You will hardly get TSMC shoes here, but you can look at them thethe model is called Stepping Stones Rovmia.
