Donald Trump announces press conference on January 6, the day one year after the former president’s supporters stormed Congress.
The 75-year-old, who still claims that he was the winner of the presidential election in November 2020, also criticizes the Congress’ ongoing investigation into the storm that cost five people their lives.
More than 650 people have so far been charged after the storm, which was an attempt to prevent the elected representatives from proclaiming the Democrat Joe Biden the winner of the election.
Trump was accused of encouraging his supporters before the storm, and was put on trial by the House of Representatives where the Democrats have the majority. The Senate, where the Republicans had the majority, acquitted him of the charge.
Trump claims that the Congress’ investigation of the events is politically motivated and says in a statement that the House of Representatives should instead investigate “the rigged presidential election in 2020”.
“I will hold a press conference in Mar-a-Lago on January 6 to discuss all this and more,” Trump said.
Democrat Biden received more than 7 million more votes than Republican Trump, who has repeatedly indicated in the past that he will run again in 2024.
