Result of Surinamese elections delayed by troubled election day | NOW

The votes for the Surinamese parliamentary elections are currently being counted, but later than planned. Due to “chaos” and long queues at polling stations, it was decided to keep the polling stations open longer, so that the results of the elections are delayed.

The elections in Suriname started quietly on Monday, but soon the first reports of irregularities came in. For example, wrong ballots were used and some people had to queue for two hours, according to the report the True Time.

Because of the “chaos,” as an independent election agency described the parliamentary elections on Monday, the first election results were postponed by two hours to 9:00 p.m. local time. The first state of the elections is also delayed.

Bouterse does not want to respond to irregularities

VHP leader Chan Santokhi calls the elections “the worst elections ever” in Suriname. According to him, people from certain political parties have been removed from polling stations and un-stamped ballots have been distributed to be declared invalid afterwards.

Santokhi calls on the government to immediately investigate these fraud cases. Bouterse was not interested in responding to the irregularities on Monday evening, reports the True Time.

The first results are expected mid-Tuesday morning. According to various Surinamese media, the NDP of Bouterse is heading for loss.
