Trump will announce his candidacy in the 2024 US presidential election / Article

Trump prepares to announce his candidacy for the 2024 US presidential election

Even before last week’s midterm elections for the US Congress, addressing his supporters in the state of Ohio, former President Trump announced that he would make a very important announcement on November 15, i.e. Tuesday, in Maralago Palm Beach. Most likely, Trump could announce his commitment to fight for the nomination of the Republican Party in the 2024 US presidential election.

“This is the year that we will take back the House, we will take back the Senate and we will take back America. But in 2024, most importantly, we will resume supporting our great White House,” Trump said.

It’s no secret that before the midterms, Republicans were extremely confident of their triumph, but control of the Senate has not been regained and the battle for the House of Representatives is still ongoing. The loss of several candidates supported by Trump in the elections can be directly explained by their sympathy for the ex-president. Many influential Republicans have called for distancing themselves from Trump to save the party. Even before the election results were announced, Trump himself predicted that if the Republicans win, he will get no credit, if he loses, he will be blamed.

Despite the criticism, commentators have indicated that Trump is still likely to decide to run, but the question is, can he win the party’s nomination? He himself is more than sure of his possibilities.

Trump said, “My approval ratings are higher even than when I was president. So there’s no reason to say people won’t vote for me. They’re already asking for jobs if I decide to run. If you look at the ratings, we’re ahead in the Republican Party by absolutely everyone, but I have Biden ahead of me by 15-20 percentage points in most polls.

However, Trump’s self-confidence doesn’t really reflect reality. After a convincing victory in Florida’s gubernatorial election, Governor Ron DeSantis is considered one of Trump’s most realistic rivals and contenders for the presidential nomination. Polls conducted by the YouGov company last week show that about 23% of Republicans would like to see Desantis as the Republican candidate, while Trump – about 20%. 41% of respondents would not like to see any of these candidates. Among Republicans, however, 41% of voters would prefer Desantis, 39% would prefer Trump.

Desantis himself has so far been very vague about his plans to run for election in 2024. The American press defines the relationship between Trump and Desantis as a sort of cold war, in which Trump has already begun to threaten to disseminate information that his rival.

Whether Trump announces his candidacy on Tuesday or changes his mind at the last minute, many eyes are also on current US President Joe Biden, who will turn 80 in five days.

Despite his respectable age, Biden expressed his willingness to run again: “I intend to run again. But this will be my family’s decision. I think everyone wants me to run, but we are still discussing it. I assume we will make this decision at the beginning of next year”.

Public opinion polls show that it would be very difficult right now to discover the winner in the possible fight between Biden and Trump, because several polls predict the victory of one or the other candidate, and with a very narrow margin of votes.

It should be remembered about the specifics of the US electoral system and Electoral College votes, which by no means reflect the true superiority of one or another party. In addition, the publication “Politico” said that before this midterm elections, Trump raised the topic of theft of the previous election, the need to change the electoral system and the need to elect Republicans to the state electoral commissions. It should only be added that none of the five candidates nominated by Trump for the positions of supervisors of the electoral commissions in particularly ideologically divided states have been approved.
