Corona in Hessen: Omicron wave follows delta variant

At the beginning of the pandemic, around Offenbach, Hanau and Darmstadt, it was the original variant, the alpha variant and then, above all, the highly contagious one Delta variant of the Coronaviruswhich caused the infection. In mid-March 2020, just over three months after the outbreak of the pandemic in China, a lockdown was imposed across Hesse. Schools and kindergartens had to close, catering and retail were no longer allowed to serve customers on site. After a brief easing phase between May and October 2020, a national lockdown came into force again between November 2020 and February 2021, albeit with more flexible measures than the first lockdown.

Towards the beginning of 2021, the vaccination campaign around Offenbach, Hanau and Darmstadt began. Although two vaccinations against the coronavirus were initially recommended, the decrease in protection against the spread of vaccinations and the surge in omicrons over the course of the year meant that the vaccination recommendation was expanded to include a booster vaccination against a severe course of the Covid-19 disease.

Editor’s Note on Transparency: The RKI’s case numbers may differ from those of individual federal states. One reason is the longer transmission paths between the RKI and the appropriate health authorities. The RKI’s Covid-19 dashboard it can also be adjusted during the day. Furthermore, the RKI warns: it could be that the drop in incidence does not reflect the actual infection process, but is the result of an overloaded reporting and testing system. Also, it may play a role that some people do not have their positive self-test or rapid test clarified with a PCR test. So they won’t appear in the stats.
