US President Donald Trump revealed in a news conference on Monday that he had been taking the drug hydroxychloroquine as a preventative against the coronavirus for a week and a half. However, it has not been medically proven to work against the virus.
It is mainly used as an agent against malaria and some other infectious diseases.
Trump said in the press conference, “I have been taking one pill every day for a week and a half and have not yet developed any side effects or symptoms.” The US president also said that he has not yet been in contact with the virus and that he is tested every few days. According to him, all tests so far have been negative.
Hydroxycholoroquine is only available with a doctor’s prescription. The drug can therefore not simply be used by everyone. The use of hydroxycholoroquine poses risks for pregnant women, among other things. Doctors previously warned against misuse of the drug.
